This is a great one. It’s been in our holiday movie rotation for years and it’s always a hit.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why do Americans pretend they're not broke when most Americans are in debt?
3·6 months agoLarry Ellison likes controlling Oracle and being a billionaire. Rather than selling stock of Oracle to fund his lifestyle, he instead borrows against the value of the stock. As Oracle appreciated, he got to keep the gains he doesn’t trigger capital gains taxes.
I never really understood this. He still has to pay the loan, and he isn’t doing that with his symbolic $1/year salary. What part am I missing?

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why do people switch from chrome to Brave browser and not to Firefox?
2·7 months agoInteresting! Thanks for the screenshots. I’m on iOS, so not familiar with Chrome vs FF on mobile.
I was curious for an example because it’s probably been a decade since I’ve had an issue with FF rendering something improperly (or even differently) compared with Chrome. A while back, we did have one internal webpage at work that had a very small difference in FF, but that went away after a few FF updates happened. I was the only one who ever noticed the difference.

92·1 year agoI see this type of comment somewhat often and I’m always left a little confused about what I’m missing. The only time I ever use the touch pads is in desktop mode, which is not that often. What games use the touch pads?

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Since Pi is infinite and non-repeating, would that mean any finite sequence of non-repeating numbers should appear somewhere in Pi?
62·1 year agoI don’t think the example given above is an apples-to-apples comparison though. This new example of “an infinite non-repeating string” is actually “an infinite non-repeating string of only 0s and 1s”. Of course it’s not going to contain a “2”, just like pi doesn’t contain a “Y”. Wouldn’t a more appropriate reframing of the original question to go with this new example be “would any finite string consisting of only 0s and 1s be present in it?”

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•I chipped my guitar finish, its only a 1k guitar brand new, what should I do?
17·1 year agoThe best way forward depends on a lot of unknowns.
- What make and model of guitar?
- What type of finish (poly or lacquer)?
- You mention “blacking it out”, so I’m guessing the color is either black or a burst?
- Where is the chip (front of the body, neck, headstock, neck/body joint, under the pick guard)?
- How big is the chip (size of a pencil eraser, size of a quarter, etc)?
- Is it down to the wood? Or only the clear coat? Is there a clear coat?
Pics would help clarify quite a lot.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Are there any animes or TV shows you can't stop recommending?
9·1 year agoPatriot, on Amazon streaming. I’ve been telling people for years—it’s the BEST show that NO ONE watched.
A depressed deep-cover operative sings bleak folk songs about his job at open mics. Stylistic elements (both visual and writing) from the Cohen brothers and Wes Anderson. Incredible cast. Funny. Sad. Two seasons, and both are great. 10/10

People…don’t just uninstall the apps when they do this. Go leave a 1-star review in whichever app store you use, and say it’s because of these nagging notifications. 1-star reviews are the weapon with which people can punish poorly behaving devs.
