Wouldn’t that end up with a big survivorship bias? The truly corrupt would have no retractions from authors or institutions and there are potential incentives for publishers to not retract.

So we had a strange early insurance change at work. HSA plan went from 6k max out of pocket to 16k.

Fuck Cars@lemmy.world•San Francisco has the infrastructure to be a transit utopia. What’s holding it back? Something smallEnglish
3·1 month agoIt was very poorly written. The fact that you (and I) read the article and don’t know what they were intending to convey is telling. I THINK the issue is fragmentation that they mention breifly, but that is probably me bring my previous opinions to the article.

KEXP wopop for example finds music from around the world you probably haven’t heard of.
right? teams is a descendant of INSTANT messaging. I actually find it more annoying if someone tries to initiate a Teams Call without the “do you have a minute for a quick call?”
Some things are easier to do via email. Some things are best discussed live. Be that via text or voice or video.

Linux@programming.dev•Those who've switched to Linux in the last year, how is it going?
7·1 month agoI switched to Nobara a couple months ago. My computer is a lot snappier. Overall its great. Some minor difficulties but no show stoppers.
Signal desktop gives me an error that it is keeping credentials in plaintext which is fucked, I tried to get it to not do that but havnt been able to figure out how. (there are tutorials for ubuntu/gnome, but I havnt figured out how to translate those to fedora/kde…
I just started using crow-translate which is amazing, but keep getting a screenshot error message. Something with wayland maybe? again when I search there is a lot of shit about ubuntu/gnome but that doesnt really help.

vegan@lemmy.world•Are you helping someone with Veganuary this year?English
71·2 months agoI’m not trying to be argumentative. I am trying to eat closer to vegan diet for a variety of reasons. That said, its not hard to raise chickens and treat them well. My biggest problem is my daughters trying to hug them when they are clearly getting irritated.

21·2 months agoThere are plenty of troops that just repair cars. Maybe those cars get used for murder, maybe they don’t. It’s a complex moral problem that is different for everyone at different levels.
By saying fuck the troops, you are falling into the trap the owners want. You are focusing on pawns rather than the kings they want to be.

movies@piefed.social•Uwe Boll is rebooting the Alone in the Dark film franchise
9·3 months agoRampage was actually a good (if fucked up) movie.
Back when I had free time, I watched a lot of bad movies. Good bad (Tromeo and Juliet ) bad bad (BloodRayne). Just about everything of Boll’s falls into the second bucket, but Rampage is in neither. I don’t want to oversell this, but its an above average movie.

Books@lemmy.world•What's the weirdest typo/error you've seen in a book?
2·3 months agoyeah. I try to give him some grace as a scifi writer with him seeing the sexual revolution in the 60s based on the release of the pill and trying to imagine where the trajectory will end in 50, 100 years when you separate sex from reproduction. Still his take was kinda creepy and gross.
I think the worst example of him trying to write women was “I Will Fear No Evil”. It is an interesting story as it attempts to reconcile sex and gender written from a cis man in the 1970s, but its pretty messed up. I appreciate that he seems to attempt to bring these ideas into mainstream consciousness, I just wonder if he could have done some more research.

4·3 months agoI have not seen that, I will have to check it out.
I thought stranger in a strange land would make a great miniseries. I loved that book as a teen. I read it as an adult some years ago and it didn’t hit the same way. Still, it could be adapted to an impactful story today. People would learn where grok came from and disassociate it with Musk’s racist piece of trash (pisses me off).

3·3 months agoI liked “I’m not ok with this”, also “teenage bounty hunters”
They pushed both even when they had already canceled them. Both were compelling enough to warrant more episodes. Nope.
I’m more bitter about “the peripheral” tho.

They are actively against SEL which is the stupidest thing I can imagine. The only thing I could imagine worse is feeding your kids lead paint chips.
