Gonna start down a rabbit hole here - but are there any good rf remotes for htpc? I’ve been using Nvidia shield devices for the better part of what feels like a decade now and they’re awesome - with the exception of lacking hardware av1 decode.

2·2 months agoDepends on how fast the technology can dump current. Lead acid is particularly good about dumping a ton of current to crank.

Same. I did have some retention early in the panel’s life (Investigation Discovery logo) - but that’s vanished and it’s been fine.

3·7 months agoI’ve got an older AMD bulldozer platform with 16 or so tb behind it. SMB serves up all of the media to Nvidia shield platforms running Kodi. Away, I’ll wire guard in to my network to remotely access media and compute as needed. I’m a big fan of not running a bunch of integrations that would fail at a time I’m just trying to watch something and relax; IT support at home after doing it all day sucks.

7·7 months agoThe older I get, the more I don’t give a fuck and just let go. Interstellar - when Cooper is watching messages from his son… Gets me every damn time.
I bought a used Ryobi lead acid riding mower with bad batteries for cheap. Converted to lithium. I was and still am psyched to get that thing out every week. And I’m in the same age range as you.

1·7 months agoThis happened to me with a good friend. He wanted to stop listening, and admittedly I was on repeat (severe depression, major life changes coming and I couldn’t cope properly) - but it has the effect of drifting us pretty severely.

2·7 months agoI love the idea behind this. Overall I’ve been burned about 3 times in my home ownership time by committing to a brand like this. The brands seem to change batteries (voltage or connectors or both) on a 5 to 10 year cycle, meaning I either have to rebuild packs (fun with newer BMS etc) or deal with China sourced minimum lifetime packs. Even bigger things do this - but I did recently bought a Ryobi ride on mower that originally had lead acid that I covered myself to a single 48v lifepo4. Their newer ride ons have large 80v “packs” that I’m sure cost an arm and a leg for a proper “official” pack.
Oh man I was going through it in my head too…
The only real issue I have with zoom is how it immediately dumps you into the call with your previous settings. Sometimes (most times) I’d rather start with the microphone muted. I’m not a regular user though, just when third party meetings get kicked off.

5·1 year agoI have a dual socket R620 with 256gb RAM that I never turn on (proxmox) and another box with a single xeon 1518d (esxi). Collapsing both down to a repurposed Sophos SG135 (atom c3558) with 32g ram, 512gb sata and a noctua fan (proxmox). I already use another sg135 running opnsense. I run mostly lightweight loads anymore (HomeAssistant, netbox, unifi controller) so I really don’t need things turned on that have overkill horsepower. I have a separate file server that I need to upgrade sometime (old 4 core bulldozer amd) but it keeps chugging away.

I’m riding into my fifties - and given recent pricing ridiculousness with video cards and now ram, my desire to build my own is significantly less. No cost savings and then adding the time investment starts to become less attractive as years go by. I was looking forward in the next year or two to upgrade my circa 2020 build. I’ve held off due to abhorrent video card pricing - Love me some games but I’ve been playing more single player non-demanding games (metroidvania types).
