Of course it was a ritual. It was a form of necromancy, to start you had to invoke the name of an ancient Roman emperor

Europa / Europe and the EU + EEA@lemmy.world•Belgium says EU leaders must share risk to use frozen Russian assets for Ukraine
2·5 months agoWhat risk? Worst outcome, Russia stops the war, leaves Ukraine, delivers Putin to the Hague, gets a democratically elected government and re-enters civilized society AND THAN we have to pay them back. We can be pessimistic, in which case that will never happen. Or optimistic, in which case: if we could get all this by just giving Russia back its money, I’d be the first to say pay them!

science@lemmy.world•Lab-grown sperm and eggs just a few years away, scientists sayEnglish
4·8 months agoThe sperm and the egg would contain different copies of the chromosomes. The cell randomly divides its chromosomes when it becomes an egg or sperm. When they merge, two halves of a genome form a full one again. But some chromosomes would be there as doubles, others would be lost. The effect would be the same as incest. Mutations that would be hidden in a healthy cell would emerge.

7·8 months agoNo, it is something different. Cloning creates a another being with the exact same DNA. This would allow people, who can’t produce viable sperm/egg cells, to reproduce with their partner. First patients would be infertile men and women.

7·1 year agoIn my experience, a lot of these politics are purely performative. Politicians get elected on the promise of ‘reducing regulations’ to ‘release the economy’, without any connection to reality. In office they than have to do something that looks like the thing they fought for. We’ve seen the same after Brexit. The ‘bad and idiotic’ EU regulations were dropped and untreated sewage was let into the sea.
