Television@piefed.social•What TV series bungled a great concept that you'd like to see tried again?English
9·1 month agoWayward Pines. Great concept but then they basically explained everything in a handful of episodes and took the whole mystery out of it. Also, some of the acting was terrible.
In some ways, Silo is its spiritual successor but without

monsters.
It corrects for those mistakes and sustains the mystery.
Another one I’d like to see redone or relaunched, West World. Incredible first season. Nothing left in the writer’s tank after that. That first season was so good though that I don’t think it can be rebooted.

3·2 months agoDavid Mamet’s “Heist”. Fantastic story, dialogue, and acting.
So many great one-liners.
“Your weight or your fate!”
“Everybody needs money. That’s why they call it ‘money’”.
And I might as well just link to the quotes page because there’s too many.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How do I keep a 9 year old from constantly licking erasers and putting them in his mouthEnglish
16·3 months agoLong shot but it could be a sign of iron deficiency. Eating, smelling and licking odd things like paper, erasers, I’ve heard of these associations. I even read about a woman who would spend her lunch hour smelling the concrete in the stairwell. Turned out to be iron deficiency.

3·4 months agoI just saw him in that Homicide episode mentioned in the article.
Homicide shares a universe with Law & Order so now I’m wondering if he was the same character when he did SVU.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Is there an actor you can't stand? Do they have any exceptions?English
9·5 months agoCame here for this. Yes, not a good person in real life from what I’ve read.
Also, terrible, wooden in so many movies. And yet, perfectly played his role in The Departed. So much so that I didn’t think it could be him at first.

1·6 months ago“Looking for a Place to Happen” was the song that brought me back to them after decades.
3Camels was, maybe still is, fully dependent on the Amazon affiliate program. A program that was reduced at one point, killed off 3Camels competitors, but not 3Camels. Then Amazon asked them to stop tracking during Covid for a time which they did.
This is around the time that I heard about Keepa which has a different model, not solely Amazon but other stores too, and not paid via affiliates program.
Also it’s just faster. 3Cs was getting super slow to notify. You’d get an email, click and surprise, that sale was over yesterday.
I probably heard about the controversy on Reddit at the time but there’s a chance I found this site here which covers some of my recollections.
There’s Instapaper and once upon a time they even gave you an email address to send links into. Maybe they still do that.
Keepa is better, and depending on whether you’re conspiratorial, not compromised as 3Camels was accused of some years ago.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's the best way to buy glasses online?English
1·8 months agoFor Canadians, there’s Kits.ca.
Of course, there’s Clearly.ca, EyeBuyDirect.com and about twenty-seven more brands and divisions of international monopoly EssilorLuxottica as well, but it’s better for everyone if we stop giving them money.
They’re responsible for raising the prices across the industry of what used to be low cost, high quality glasses.
For the curious, Wikipedia articles aren’t very up-to-date or consistent with the common information across the company, divisions and mergers but this one shows the most detail about the criticism.

6·8 months agoTheir email and even their “Plex: Free vs Paid” page is confusing. However, the “Requirements for Remote Playback of Personal Media“ is more clear.
I do not have a Plex Pass, but I stream remotely from a Plex Media Server
To stream video remotely from a Plex Media Server, you will need either a Remote Watch Pass or Plex Pass subscription on your account or the admin of the Plex Media Server from which you stream will need a Plex Pass subscription on their account.

Voyager@lemmy.world•State of Voyager for Lemmy, 2025 editionEnglish
1·10 months agoI’m coming back to add another request idea:
Ability to search Saved posts.
I save a lot of useful things on Lemmy but it’s difficult to find again later. You can’t search Saved Posts in this app nor on the website and you can’t set up an RSS feed like on Reddit to get the articles/posts out to somewhere else.
Even if you know the precise title of the post, general search on Lemmy almost never brings it up in the results.
I think Voyager could certainly help compensate for this shortcoming in Lemmy.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do you know of a DRM-free music app with an algorithm?English
15·11 months agoYou can listen to the tracks, ad-free, get recommendations below the album listing (maybe other ways too), buy DRM-free and support the artists better than any streaming service would be willing to.
If you do go local library and are looking for recommendation algorithm, Apple Music (the app, not the streaming service) sells DRM-free as well and has the Genius function that will group songs based on similar preferences. However, I don’t believe it will pull in recommendations outside your own library. Worth checking.

I mentioned this in another thread recently:
Cooper’s Christmas (aka Cooper’s Camera)
Jason Jones, Samantha Bee, Dave Foley and the very excellent Mike Beaver.
It’s my favourite Canadian Christmas comedy B-movie, a very specific genre to be sure.
