Linux@lemmy.ml•What distro do you install on other's computers?
5·3 months agoI installed OpenSUSE Tumbleweed on 2 friend’s pcs.
One of them has moved to an iMac now (apple fanboy, was going to do that anyway, no convincing possible) though he did like linux more than windows.
The other dual-booted for a while and finally “booted” windows off of his pc last month. He’s pretty happy with it, too.

3·10 months agoI moved from Win 10 to OpenSUSE Tumbleweed 2 months ago. Going very well so far, even for music production and gaming. I also got a friend of mine to dual-boot Tumbleweed/Win11, coming from Win11.
Maybe motorola? I don’t know about chinese spying, and my g31 has a headphone jack, micro sd card slot and a pretty large battery (and is pretty affordable).
I’ve recently exchanged Davinci Resolve for Kdenlive on my pc, and have been extremely pleased with it.

Games@lemmy.world•Steven Spielberg is ‘a big PC Gamer’ — loves shooters, and insists on keyboard and mouseEnglish
1·1 year agoWhich is a good thing, I think. The good thing about keyboards is that they can control (to various degrees of efficiency) everything going on on a computer. It’s an allrounder and imo does many things well. I’m not denying that there may be better ways to play games (although some outright require a kb, e.g. games with a text chat), but games supporting keyboards is good and natural considering their allrounder nature.

1·1 year agoThere are ergonomic keyboards for those that want them. Look up something like the “Glove80” Keyboard.
That’s awfully helpful
I find the idea of a phone without any ports incredibly distressing. You’re probably right, though. It won’t be that long before apple and/or samsung try that.
I realize now that I’m likely in a loud minority.
As long as there are half-decent phones with usb & 3.5mm ports and sd slots, I’m content. The large manufacturers can do what they want for all I care - I just hope my niche persists.
Thanks for this exchange.
Fair. Although I have more to say.
Maybe this connector from the 50s has survived this long because it’s perfect (or at least really good) at its job? There is a reason why all professional equipment uses analog connections.
I agree that at a price point of 6€ or 20€, it doesn’t make much of a difference for most headphones - although I’d like to mention that for 20€, you’re already in the price range of cheap IEMs (“In-Ear Monitors”), which are really good in terms of price to sound quality.
If you want reliable earbuds with good sound quality and affordable price (between 20€ and 100€), IEMs are a really good choice.
Also, their cables are pretty much always robust and replaceable, so if one does break, you won’t have to buy new headphones altogether.
The only “caveat” with IEMs is that they exclusively have analog connections (3.5mm). I think that’s a good thing, though: the manufacturer has more budget for better cables and audio drivers this way.
I hope I could shed some more light on this :)
USBC and lightning are both still digital connections, meaning you have to have a digital-to-analog converter un the headphones themselves, making them more expensive and more complicated.
Also, you can’t charge and listen at the same time (without an additional cable).
3.5 mm is the “old reliable” - I will never buy a phone without both a 3.5mm jack and a MicroSD card slot.

Technology@lemmy.ml•Discord lowers free upload limit to 10MB: “Storage management is expensive”
1·1 year agoDepends on the Quality setting and version of jpeg. Even the original jpeg, on high quality, will result in little to no data loss. IIRC, Jpeg can even do lossless, with the only caveat being that it doesn’t save alpha channels (but screenshots don’t need to have transparency, anyway). Newer versions of jpeg, such as jpeg-2000 (and the much less broadly supported jpeg-XL) have much better compression and provide higher image quality at lower file size.
“jpegification” or “Deep-frying” only really occurs with the original jpeg at low quality settings.
