Seriously, the number of times I’ve had to migrate off a google product because they couldn’t figure out how to make money off it (and didn’t want to open source it) is too damn high

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why does everyone put celery in soup stock?English
10·15 天前I still have strong memories of a dish my mother used to make a few times a year that prominently included water chestnuts and the sinking feeling I would get as I took my first bite. Blegh

3·15 天前this is the way
it has some unique console features, such as size (you can build one that size but it’ll be pricier for the same specs, see linus’s monstrosity), CEC support, and a dedicated internal antenna for lower latency wireless controller support
the pre-built market is still huge actually and this will be a pretty reasonable prebuilt for the majority of households

7·1 个月前Very excite 😋
I was literally just pondering this. I’ve got a local backup job that is a very simple rsync command which I originally setup as a cron job. I’ve got a cloud backup job I setup later with systemd timers. I went to add a new backup job and had to decide which to go with.
There is absolutely still a place for the cron jobs. If you are aware of it’s limitations it cannot get simpler than a new /etc/cron.d/ file with a single line. But the systemd timer path offers some nice functionality in exchange for a tad more complexity and less footguns. Whichever one you understand the best is probably the best answer.

PC Gaming@lemmy.ca•Linus Tech Tips “disappointed” Steam Machine won’t be priced like a console - DexertoEnglish
16·1 个月前I think it’ll sell just fine. They’re not gonna manufacture them in console sized batches. They’ll sell what they make and manufacture more if people like it. Gonna pair well with the headset. I think it’s a rich kid and nerdy tech guy console.

Linux Gaming@lemmy.world•Valve reportedly cooking native Linux version of Half-Life: Alyx, optimized for Steam Frame VREnglish
14·2 个月前probably not, they’ve been building a translation layer called FEX that does x86 -> ARM, reasonable to expect it’s an x86 build optimized for FEX and the hardware specs of the Frame https://github.com/FEX-Emu/FEX
but honestly who knows, they might just release an ARM native build, it’s their own damn game, they were one of the earliest gaming companies to port games originally written for windows to linux, it’s entirely possible they’ll do a full port (am I remembering wrong internet?)
the FEX thing is underrated, I know FEX isn’t new but the news that we can expect to performantly run almost our entire steam catalogue on ARM hardware is wild

2·2 个月前We started shopping for an EV about a month before the rebate expired and ended up getting a used one that wouldn’t have qualified for the rebate a couple weeks after the deadline. It was pretty clear to us that most used EVs that qualified were snapped up in the preceding weeks. As far as new EVs, we saw a moderate price drop after the rebates. Not quite enough to cover the lost rebates but it was clear manufacturers were trying to compensate.
All this to say I suspect the rebate expiration led to a bunch of used EV sales eating into new EV sales and I don’t see a huge price difference on new EVs post-rebate. EVs are a little pricier than their ICE counterparts but I don’t think the rebate expiration made much of a difference to consumers. Pretty clear manufacturers were the real beneficiaries.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•People dont believe protesting works if they will only do it on their day off.English
24·2 个月前I think the term “protest” is what throws people off. Protest can encompass a lot of different actions, including showing up to a park on the weekend. But when a lot of people hear “protest”, they imagine more direct action. They imagine people directly interfering with the fascist’s agenda.
These seem more like rallies to me. The point seems to be less about interfering with the fascist administration and more about stretching organizing muscles, building networks and strengthening the resolve of millions of people around the country. Reminding them that so many of their friends and neighbors care enough to show up too. These aren’t direct action in the same way but I think they still serve an important purpose.
We are building a web of trust and solidarity for the days ahead. Things will get worse, we are not even a year into this administration and I don’t think the gloves have really come off yet. These protest or rallies or whatever you want to call them will help us be ready. When the time comes there will be organizers and volunteers and millions of people ready to step together and fight for what we believe in. But first, this.

Technology@beehaw.org•📚 Ruminating on eReaders: Rambling thoughts and memories of my first two eReaders, the Kindle Keyboard and Kindle VoyageEnglish
8·3 个月前My Kindle is significantly lighter than my phone which makes it easier to hold for long stretches. The screen is bigger and I can render the text a little larger without sacrificing too much. The screen doesn’t produce light on it’s own which reduces eyestrain. My Kindle has a warm nightlight which I hope helps me sleep better. The page turn buttons are better placed than the volume buttons
I’ve read for hundreds and hundreds of hours on both phone and Kindle and the Kindle is absolutely worth the cost for me (once it’s hacked). I hope there are better and more open options available when it finally dies.

2·4 个月前I’ve been out of dota for a few years (I started playing back when it was a wc3 mod), anyone feel like giving me a rundown of some of the teams and current meta? I watched a few snippets from the playoffs and it was nice to see some of the old favorites like sand king/rubick and void show up. Looked like a lot of variety of heroes which is always a good sign.

Games@lemmy.world•The big Call to Arms update for Valheim is out nowEnglish
121·4 个月前Yes! I’ve done 2 or 3 “playthroughs” now and enjoyed it every time. There is still one more environment the devs have promised so might be worth waiting for that to drop. Valheim has great vibes and great gameplay. The grind has improved (somewhat) with new items and there has been a lot of new content added since you last played. I definitely recommend. It’s always better with friends so hopefully you can convince them to join you.
We just hit phase two of food gardening, which is food preservation. We are canning for the first time tonight, 5 quarts of Roma tomatoes from the garden. Here’s hoping it goes well 🤞.
