I should add, Debian is more “bare bones” than more gaming focused distros. e.g. flatpak isn’t installed by default on Debian, so you have to take that step before you can install steam via the gnome store or command line. It’s not difficult, but it is an additional step.
I’ve been using Steam via flatpak on Debian without any issues (yet) since Trixie released.
Happened to me with a group of people when offroading out in the middle of nowhere and no data/wireless. Almost impossible to share info without going back to civilization. Doesn’t happen often, but its a nice feature to have.
If sending a message is the only requirement, email fits the bill and has worked for half a century. If we’re being real, the reason Signal “can’t do what Telegram does” is because Telegram doesn’t even attempt to do what Signal does. Signal is tackling a much bigger problem.
Telegram is basically not even encrypted. They are not offering the same service.
Meredith mentioned in a reply to her posts that they do leverage multi-cloud and were able to fall back onto GCP (Google Cloud Platform), which enabled Signal to recover quicker than just waiting on AWS. That’s true, but its not always about the server, people tend to download images/memes/etc with the intent to edit/share. If you were on macos and happened to download a webp image in the 10 years that Apple didn’t support them, you were in for some googling and/or frustration.
yeah macOS supports webp now (since ~2020), but it lacked support for a decade, causing frustration for its users and anyone trying to support macOS/Safari.
its interesting to me that this is only really an issue on proprietary OS’s (mac/windows) as i’ve never had an issue with any image or video formats when using linux. i use all three but linux is my primary OS. mac/windows mostly stay at work.
