  • I have (idle) hopes that most of the losses will fall on the people that created this mess. I know that’s not what happened in 2008 but one can hope. I’m not into stocks myself so I hope I would be safe when it happens but you never know, I was too young in 2008 to see/feel the full effects of it happening. Maybe I’d be screwed too. But I’d honestly take a few years of things being shitty over the nonsense what’s happening now. I got through covid, I’m sure this would be manageable too, especially since I live in Europe.

  • I agree, I think it’s all about affordability and ease of use. If they can sell them for a nice price (somewhere around the price of a PS5 pro) and they’re easy to use I don’t see a reason why they wouldn’t sell. Hell, I might even buy one myself. I have a very old gaming pc (close to 10 years old now) and even though I’ve replaced some parts over the years (ram, GPU, storage), the core of it is still very outdated and it might almost be cheaper to switch to something like this then to upgrade my existing pc.

  • Or, get this: make it so people don’t take the car. Most of the accidents that involve serious injury or death involve cars or some other fast, motorized vehicle. Why not make more bike and pedestrian infrastructure? I also live in the Netherlands and even here I’d say there are very different approaches based on which city/town you’re in. I really wish they’d make my city more accessible with public transport, there are certain routes where taking public transport to another part of town takes almost 2-3 times as long as taking a car. Why is that? Why not fund public transport and non-motorized traffic infrastructure even more?

  • Let me preface this by saying I haven’t read the article so i can’t say anything about this specific case.

As for your comment, I agree. It’s one thing to have an e-bike that goes slightly faster than regular cycling speed (20-25 km/h). However, where I live (the Netherlands) there’s have “fatbikes” now, basically the current generations scooter which is given to children at a much younger age and not regulated at all. No helmets, no protective clothing, no minimum age, nothing. Those things can go faster than 30 km/h and it’s somewhat common to tune them to go 40 km/h or more. That is a ridiculous speed for a 12 year old to take part in traffic with.

You’re going faster than a car driving to a neighborhood area here. There’s a reason why cars can only go 30 and somehow you can go 40? Add to that the brazenness of a young kid and you have a pretty dangerous cocktail. Fatbikes formed a large share of the traffic accidents last year and there doesn’t seem to be any sign of this changing with the government we have here being constantly in crisis or getting ready for another doomed election.

  • I wish it was like that here in the Netherlands. Instead we get flights that stay more or less the same price due to heavy subsidies and constant bickering about the trains. They’ve already announced another 10% price hike on trains for the coming year, after already raising it by 5-10% every single year for the past few years. It’s insane. Add to that the extra inconvenience of having to cross borders with mediocre connections and I can understand that people don’t take the train.

  • As a Dutch person, I’m very pleased this happened. The only thing that could’ve made it better is if it happened earlier. In the news coverage yesterday you could already see all the “ex” government parties trying to spin it in the most positive way for themselves. I really hope it doesn’t work this time. 2 of the 4 current government parties look set to be nuked next time around and have basically no influence anymore. I just really hope that means that people look more towards the left (or at least the center) when voting again. We’ve had a very long time with right wing governments now and enough is enough.

Our country has been suffering for a long time and things have definitely been getting worse societally, more and more people have been turning into right wing nut jobs who assault police and medical personnel and misbehave in all possible ways.

While I partly agree with you, I wouldn’t thank that idiot for it. There’s a good chance that what he’s doing (even if it doesn’t fully impact Europe) will eventually drag us into it as well. If he keeps going after China he will at some point set Europe an ultimatum too: stay friends with us and stop everything you’re doing with China or be our enemy. If we choose the latter it might eventually even lead to some form of war…

Let’s hope that doesn’t happen (and most of the damage is contained within the US itself, for better or worse).
