I’m convinced Bungie is still chasing the specter of eSports PvP. So, they’re “adapting” their PvE square peg to fit in a PvEvP round hole.
This has flop written all over it. Why can Marathon get contextual ping but Destiny doesn’t? How do you make a loot chase where you might loose all your loot in a round?

2·9 months agoOr, if you decide you MUST use corporate social media, put it behind a secure web browser and isolate your use to only social media.
I can’t be sure it works 100%. I can just hope Brave and Google have competing interests for me.
But best to stop patronizing those platforms as best you can.
What if anything do you do to try to mitigate it?

1·9 months agoYou make a really good point here. However, is that same anti-indexed nature a boon in the era of Ai site scraping.

1·9 months agoIt definitely let people create insulated pockets. Is there a chat app that doesn’t do that? Telegram?

16·9 months agoDiscord was talking about going public, probably changing their profit incentives. My group and I were talking about setting up a Rocket Chat if that happened. But it has to have IRC compatibility, right? Can IRC provide real-time audio communications? Discord is a failover when in-game communication isn’t working for some reason.

4·9 months agoI keep an eye for engaging content on reddit and just rip it here. Mastodon and I think even BlueSky ran on repost bots in the early days. People have to find stuff here first.
I think, though, I stuck a Leminal Space link in my bio or upvoted a Luigi and got banned. So, not sure if you can directly link to Leminal over there or not.

I’m less worried about Discord, honestly.

3·10 months agoI’ve been pretty happy with it as my casual web search browser, putting all my social media on a different browser. And it’s in F-Droid, so that always feels good.
I feel for you. Here’s hoping the new system is clean.
I’m being told Winnie the Pooh references are racist? Is there confusion that the identification is the yellow skin rather than the facial expression? I’m almost certain that meme is talking about how his face looks like Winnie the Pooh, right?

21·1 year agoThat’s actually a fair point. I’ve seen it in the UI but I’m not sure exactly how it works, but it seems like there’s communities to moderate and curate and you can simply enable them to moderate your feed, if I’m understanding it right. If so, it sounds like a really good way to compartmentalize that stuff to allow users to sort it themselves.

12·1 year ago“Why can’t the algo find me better content?”
Motherfucker, it’s social media. You have to get social with people. Make a fucking friend, right?
Like, I fixed that shit by following George Takei and Mark Hamill and some reporters. The algo shouldn’t be finding things for you. You should be finding people.
Yeah, scratching my head just the same. My only problem with Mastodon is the same I had with StumbleUpon. It’s way too good about putting neat people and conversations in front of me and I feel bad not rising to the occasion more when I just want to deadbrain.

41·1 year agoIt just feels more like Classic Twitter, and I can imagine some users like that vibe, despite Mastodon perhaps having the better technicals to keep social media federated. I use both and they have their audience. There are services that allow crossposting too, so I’ve got a BlueSky instance out there copying my Mastodon into that feed. Just to reach out.

35·1 year agoI’m not sure what the practicals of doing something like this will be, but it speaks a lot to who Eugen Rochko is.
He might also be an obtuse dick. I’ve gotten that vibe too. Still, good for him.
The interest your domestic and foreign corporate social media platforms have in you are VASTLY different. It’s naive to equivocate them. Yes, TikTok should get “banned”, which will just be pulling the app from the app store and likely still available as a web app maybe through a VPN. They’re just going to create more friction in getting access.
Instead of advocating for spyware, perhaps we should be highlighting open alternatives?
