I always thought that it meant: just because someone has authority over one subject, doesn’t mean they have it for another. Just because Einstein is good at math and physics doesn’t mean his quotes about philosophy and religion hold any authority.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How do you make proper "I am interested in you." eye contact?
4·1 year agoI’m not yet 30 and I think it’s good applicable advice. I think you can actually practice a lot of these skills by making friends. The difference between romantic and platonic isn’t that big.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How do you make proper "I am interested in you." eye contact?
21·1 year agoSo I think the question could be refined a little. Eye contact helps build connection between people, but it’s not the only piece of the puzzle. Maybe a better question is “'How do I communicate more empathetically?”
There’s another question; “How do I let someone know I’m interested?” This question is related to the first in that trying to get close to another person (being vulnerable with each other) and communicating your feelings is how you let someone know your interested.
TLDR: get to know them and tell them you’re interested. If they say they’re not interested you can probably still be friends since you already got to know each other. Empathy and humility/vulnerability are key in building relationships.

Games@sh.itjust.works•With equal parts confusion and shame, I regret to inform you that Skibidi Toilet is coming to FortniteEnglish
1·1 year agoI got the fact that it’s a SFM YouTube poop after I looked it up. I get why the kids like it and they keep making more. It’s all very cozy and internet.
What I don’t get is corpos trying to put skibidi toilet into things. I get why they’re doing, child money. But like how do you integrate something as abstract and absurd into your own IP? But like in a way that kids will still think it’s cool and not like dumb corpos trying to get on the bandwagon. Or maybe it’s not working and we’re just hearing about the attempts before they fail.
So like, what problem does immortality solve? Because when I think about, it’s just giving me more time to deal with more problems. Like how good of a person I am doesn’t change if I live longer.
How would being immortal make your life better? because I’m just not sure I get it.

Technology@lemmy.world•Soon, the tech behind ChatGPT may help drone operators decide which enemies to killEnglish
11·1 year agoAh, because whoever they kill is definitely an enemy. If they were already infallible why do they need AI?
Yeah the primarchs do it, and it’s kinda weird. But they are inhuman monsters that have to serve as generals and politicians, so I forgive them.
When space Marines do it the it’s kinda like how priests refer to each other as brother, but also battle brother is a rank.
I think it is also there to make things seem more theatric/dramatic. Like just how many books start with a dramatis personae? We’re not reading about people, we’re reading about characters in a space opera. No matter how you look at it, it’s still pretty silly.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How would you process the fact that a new friend of yours is a cop? (USA)
42·1 year agoI have a couple of friends in law enforcement (NYPD & state Police). They tend to be best cops around, one of them is being sent to be a trainer so he can get some bigger promotions.
You got to ask yourself and maybe them if they are a good person. All cops are bad because of what the system does to them. But who they are in spite of what that system is doing says more about who they are as a person.
Chances are they’ll have edgy jokes, but you’ve been on the Internet long enough to end up here, so I’m sure you can navigate that.
Remember conservatives hate liberal arts colleges because people who are exposed to diversity are more tolerant of it.
Assuming it’s the US
- set up a fund to provide free school lunches until the government provides them
- give grants for people to set up housing co-ops
- hire my own army of Russian trolls (they do not need to be Russian, I am inclusive to all trolls) to fracture conservative unity/support progressive
- buy up some social media companies. (YouTube would be best, but I don’t the 300 billion is enough) make the algorithm progressive
- whatever is left over goes to renewables and conservation efforts

Linux@lemmy.ml•Tell one thing that you miss after switching from another OS to Linux.
4·1 year agoThere was a lot more I missed when I switched, can’t think of anything now. I was going to joke that I miss being 19. But eh, I’m doing better now than I was then.

Technology@lemmy.world•ChatGPT is right-wing and Gemini is left-wing: Why each AI has its own ideologyEnglish
1·1 year agoIt’s really annoying actually. Sometimes you’re asking something completely benign, and it’s likes sorry I’m an AI and I can’t do anything.
Example: I asked it what a commonplace book was. Apparently language models don’t have the capacity to help with that!
I think they’re implying that legitimate things are immediate, sad, and personal. But I think all of these options are legitimate reasons to cry.
What’s an illegitimate reason? To manipulate someone

51·1 year agoCity folks are definitely a thing, and suburban folks ain’t much different. The US is big and has a lot of rural communities. Even the most populated states (California, Texas, New York) all have large areas of agriculture or otherwise sparse population

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What discussion you know you are on the wrong side of?
91·1 year agoI know a few trans or nonbinary folks. They either go by he, she, or they. I have yet to meet someone who doesn’t. Then again I live in a weird progressive rural community.
But if someone asks me to refer to them a particular way, sure what not? It means more to them than it means to me.

Not The Onion@lemmy.world•Elon Musk says too many game studios are owned by giant corporations so his giant corporation is going to start a studio to 'make games great again'English
6·1 year agoUmm, okay. It takes a long ass time to make a game. This will be a new untested studio. Even if they start making good games it’s going to be years from now.
Red flag. Bad opsec. I wouldn’t trust someone who trusts me.
The point of social media is to interact with other people, asking questions is a good way to do that. I asked you because you sounded like you knew what you were talking about. I did Google it and there is no good evidence that it causes cancer. But they think it might increase risk. It’s very hard to study that.
Not once did I mention eating meat. I was a vegetarian for 20 years, I eat meat very occasionally nowadays.

It’s cool, but buying produce from your neighbors is also cool. Strong communities thrive together
