I’d say AirBnB’s pricing is worse since my hotel stay means I can just pack my stuff and leave. Most of the AirBnB’s I’ve stayed at have required me to cleanup after myself like I didn’t just pay a “cleaning” fee.

Not to mention that AirBnB doesn’t give me “points” to stay nights for free. So if you travel for work especially you basically squander your money away. AirBnB only makes sense if you’re a group of people and even then my last trip with them ended up being one where I regretted just not paying for me and my friends to stay in individual hotel rooms because it would have been cheaper and more convenient for parking and amenities.

92·1 month agoI suspect the “threatens economic stability” is stuff like printers that can produce dollars and the type of paper/thread/plastic material that makes up modern currency. I think people are looking for a conspiracy here when it’s just a logical choice. Some things people shouldn’t have a playbook on how to create.

The Pilot is also one of the best in its class amongst family 3 rows.

Technology@lemmy.world•Apple is reportedly getting ready to introduce ads to its Maps appEnglish
2·2 months agoYeah, the first time it happened on Google Maps I thought it was just an issue with like that small section of bridge/overpass, but then it did it again and I was just stuck in the same traffic but now even further behind. It was incredibly odd. By like the 4th time I was like “ok, if I don’t stop using you then it’s on me for being so frustrated.”

71·2 months agoHere in Cali I’ve noticed it’s actually better. Google Maps has been ass for the last 4 years for me. Wrong data, it takes me randomly off the freeway only to loop my back and put me right back where I got off. It has completely wrong traffic data, and it has road closures it thinks are still open. When I travel around the bay for work I mostly use Apple Maps.

Technology@lemmy.world•Study Boldly Claims 4K And 8K TVs Aren't Much Better Than HD To Your Eyes, But Is It True?English
82·2 months agoI like how you’re calling bullshit on a study because you feel like you know better.
Read the report, and go check the study. They note that the biggest gains in human visibility for displays comes from contrast (largest reason), brightness, and color accuracy. All of which has drastically increased over the last 15 years. Look at a really good high end 1080p monitor and a low end 4k monitor and you will actively choose the 1080p monitor. It’s more pleasing to the eye, and you don’t notice the difference in pixel size at that scale.
Sure distance plays some level of scale, but they also noted that by performing the test at the same distance with the same size. They’re controlling for a variable you aren’t even controlling for in your own comment.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Did Border Control exist in previous eras? (Say, like 500+ years ago or more) Can people go to other places? If so, what does the procedure look like? Just walk across a border?English
10·2 months agoI mean… one of the great wonders of the world is literally a border wall with its own border patrol that was placed on it. Albeit a lot more complex than that, but that’s sort of the gist of it. It helped to keep “invaders” out and operated as an early warning system, but effectively was a border patrol.

2·3 months agoIt wasn’t designed that way, but it turned into a system that forced private enterprise to play pay and benefits catch up.
Also, it was protected and had regulations, but when the people in power simply ignore those regulations it doesn’t matter. The problem here is that people have lived in relative comfort for the last 70 years and were throwing it away to remember what a history book could have taught us.

Not The Onion@lemmy.world•Government Workers Say Their Out-of-Office Replies Were Forcibly Changed to Blame Democrats for ShutdownEnglish
88·3 months agoThe problem is that for many of the nearly retired folks a job in the government was the promise of a good wage with great benefits and good retirement options. They want it gone because it forced other companies to play catch up in pay and benefits whenever the government could pay better.
It’s also not easy to walk away from a pension program when you’re so invested in it. It’s designed to make people stay long term and put in the work.

2·3 months agoIt’s a smaller unit for my camera setup and it’s in a cooler area. When I open the safe up it’s basically the same temp. So I’m not worried about thermal performance. At least on that front. The camera system is just for home monitoring. The main components (what you mentioned being concerned about) stay hidden too behind the closet wall in my office and the wall is an interior wall so thermally they stay pretty smooth.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•How do you secure your home lab? Like, physically? From thieves?English
11·3 months agoSince the other comments seem to be less than useful ideas on things you didn’t ask about…
I keep my NAS/Video server for my home cameras in my gun safe. Costco has a gun safe (really can be used for anything like documents too since it’s fire rated) that had power cable running to the inside. I used the same path to run a data cable and keep it all locked up in there with a monitor mounted on top and a UPS in the middle. My safe is close to my room with the idea being if someone wanted to break in I’d keep the footage. Not that anyone would, but like you seem to be asking I’m more concerned about the what if.
The rest of the switches/routers/WAP Controller is located in my home office closet inside of one of those on-Q boxes in the wall.
We did that with CARB and now the feds are trying to stop it after decades of other states signing on because it worked so well here in Cali.
You go your whole life not getting punched in the face, then one day I punch you in the face and tell you I’m going to punch you in the face every day. Then I tell you unless you make a deal with me I’m going to punch you in the face and kick you in the balls. Now, getting kicked in the boys is not fun, but you should still be mad at me for punching you in the face in the first place.
The tariffs only would have been higher because the same idiot that got the deal made the tariffs higher to begin with.
The only sort of lucky part for us Americans is if it’s approved we got the better end of the deal, but ultimately we’re going to be paying higher prices for things we’re likely unable to produce. Although I get the feeling that Italian Marble and French Wines will suddenly be exempt from tariffs.

LSC as a car-tuber is just such a gift. No click bait, no rage bait, no being a dick in his cars. Just a love of vehicles and working on them. Him and Doug DeMuro are like the only thing keeping me sane in the car community since all the others turn to super cars, buying insanely expensive stuff, and just constant environmental shitting and debauchery. I know my cars aren’t great for the environment, but the way other car-tubers just open pollute and destroy the environment is disheartening.
