Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How do you not feel lazy at your wfh job?
2·7 months agoHonestly I used to get this, now I just focus on what tangible deliverables I have and if I’m getting them done in a timely manner. If I am, I take whatever time I need away from work.
I also like working flexible hours. Sometimes meetings bog me down and I have trouble constantly context switching (there’s something called a context switching cognitive penalty). So on those days I’ll relax in between meetings (other than some minor maintenance and meeting prep work), and then I’ll get some work done after hours when I’m feeling more focused and won’t be interrupted. Though this may not be possible for everyone with family obligations.
Finally, find some fun projects to do at work in between other obligations. Doesn’t have to be some major thing, but sometimes I’ll find an opportunity to develop minor tooling to help myself or my team. I try to find things that will also develop my own skillset.
Bonus is that a lot of my side projects get brought up during my performance review.
The above makes it sound like I work way more than 40 hours a week, I definitely do not lol. But doing things at my own pace lets me get all my work done and then some, and I have a work life balance.
This was a fascinating read, thank you for explaining in such detail.

World News@lemmy.world•Cambodia to nominate Donald Trump for Nobel Peace Prize, says deputy PMEnglish
51·7 months agoSounds like it lol.
Based on the article, the deputy prime minister added that he’s grateful for the reduced tariff in the same statement in which he said they’d nominate the orange buffoon.
They could not be more transparent.

461·8 months agoIt’s insane to me that anyone would think these things are reliable for something as important as your own psychology/health.
Even using them for coding which is the one thing they’re halfway decent at will lead to disastrous code if you don’t already know what you’re doing.

Memes@lemmy.ml•It's a fucking nightmare out there. I say take advantage of every tool you have.
1·8 months agoMy previous manager (same company, different team) was an idiot who somehow failed his way up and he gave way too much credit to courses and certificates. He would end up hiring the worst people (both from a team fit and a skills fit). The one candidate I pushed for that didn’t have any of that BS ended up being awesome.
Luckily enough people complained and a few people quit that he got banished to the shadow realm (he’s good at a completely different skillset which requires you to be stupidly annoying like he is, so they moved him to a team of…just himself).

19·9 months agoIt’s kind of hilarious that “AI” is taking us down without even being actual AI. Maybe hilarious isn’t the right word.

Television@piefed.social•'The Office' star Rainn Wilson says it was 'chaotic' after 'comic engine' Steve Carell left
4·9 months agoI totally agree, I just wish more studios would agree to give shows the graceful ending they deserve.
I feel like from a writing perspective, it would also help to know how long your show is going to be so you can fit in everything you want appropriately.

6·9 months agoI think That 70s Show was 8 seasons long if I’m remembering correctly and you’re right, season 8 was absolutely terrible. It had been declining already by then, but atleast if they ended with season 7, they would’ve ended in a better spot.
Honestly season 8 felt like a spinoff written by someone else.
I was so confused by the original post because I saw “Tery” and thought this was supposed to be Batman Beyond lol
I know nothing about art and at most, I’ll just think some piece of art is cool.
But this piece had me mesmerized and actually wanting it on canvas to hang on a wall.

Technology@lemmy.world•Kill your Feeds - Stop letting algorithms dictate how you thinkEnglish
486·1 year agoLOL
I was actually thinking about my experience with Lemmy as I was reading this article, particularly how the scrolling is made to generate rage. I don’t filter my feed and just view “all”, but I don’t think I’ve once walked away from Lemmy not in a bad mood.
Now that may be observation bias or something, or a function of how I don’t tailor my own experience, but regardless, Lemmy leaves me angrier when I leave then when I open the app. I’m trying to cut back and eventually quit.
Don’t forget about his other grand accomplishments like MyFace or Pee Bibs!

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•what advice was great when you first heard it, but has aged like milk since then?
11·1 year agoNot the person you’re responding to, but I think that the argument “we shouldn’t do X because no other animals do it” is a bad argument in general and overall weakens your position. Because there are plenty of things that humans do that animals don’t do that are good (like developing and applying vaccines for example).
There are plenty of other valid and good reasons to promote dairy alternatives (such as health or environmental reasons).
I use the same laptop bag for several trips a year, so I often don’t clear out all the pockets. The other day I realized I’ve been flying back and forth with a lighter I got from Vegas 2 years ago because it was buried at the bottom of a pocket. As for why the hell I had it in my laptop bag in the first place, I have no idea.

Technology@lemmy.world•Elon Musk threatens to ban Apple devices from his companies over OpenAI partnershipEnglish
3·2 years agoYep, this seems like the exact kind of thing companies would enforce with MDM.
I know one of my previous companies would enforce certain settings were changed if you wanted to install the MDM profile on a BYOD phone (like minimum 8 digit PIN), so requiring you to opt out of OpenAI Siri integration seems like a policy MDMs would offer.
(Though I would never install a company’s MDM profile on my personal phone lol - if they want me to be accessible and have work apps, they can provide a separate work phone)

Ironically, my manager was someone who did very little “managing” and mostly did hands on work (I work IT), and he just got laid off.
Meanwhile all the leeches that spout BS metrics that are faulty are all still here. Idiots all around.
