I can’t believe they would do this to poor Borland. I guess I’ll just need to use an AMD GPU for my Turbo Pascal fun.

My rebuttal would be “people without empathy don’t deserve to live either, but I’ll spare you this time mother.” Yeah, I don’t see eye to eye with my mom much.

Reminds me of the Cory Doctorow story Unauthorized Bread. It’s as depressing as it is relevant even though it tries to shoot for hope.
My daughter switched to a flip phone around the same time. She was mostly inspired my my wife and I, though we went different directions. I am on GrapheneOS with no connected external accounts of social media, while my wife got a Minimal Phone with an e-ink screen which curtailed a lot of social media and doom scrolling and increased ebook reading.
My daughter’s flip phone (Nokia) actually has turn by turn directions, though it is clunky. It can technically play music from an sdcard, but it is also very clunky so she doesn’t bother.
Local media from PC with headphones usually. Otherwise from my phone in my car from local media or my DAP with headphones.

That’s surely going to help with their population decline problem.

I had this sort of thing happen all the time at my last job. Eventually everyone just accepted that I was the one to ask. Then it backfired and they started assuming that i was the one to ask about everything. Then it double backfired and they started inviting me to meetings as a SME (subject matter expert)… about basically everything whether I knew much about them or not.

Well, I did say mostly sane. I’ve been on the site longer than most/all of the admins and have never had an issue, but I don’t post often. I know one of the current admins is a Google employee, so maybe they feel the need to defend their evil provider.

I don’t think I’d lump lobste.rs in with hackernews, as it has always been basically a mostly sane alternative to hackernews.

Cows when young are absolutely puppy like. We had a pet calf when I was a kid named Softy. My stepmom insisted we buy him and bring him home when we visited a rural county fair because he was so cute. He ended up thinking that he was one of our dogs for a while, even played fetch (poorly heh). Once he got big (and admittedly mean as hell), someone ended up stealing him from his pasture while we were away for the day. Poor Softy.

I am pretty sure that “bits and pieces glued together” is the grade directly below it known as “bonded leather”. I think “genuine leather” is the first grade that is real leather. It just isn’t actually very good leather.
Admittedly, the small file chunks made sense on dialup, but man did it suck when you’d end up with 102 of 110 files and then they’d vanish.

Or the even worse era of trolling IRC chats looking for DCC bots and hoping your feeble attempts at security or obfuscation will hold. Ah, the good ol days.
Exactly the type of super human that would engage in N900 necromancy.
Awesome shutdown from the guy, but I can’t get over that user name. More like CursedUserName.

This is one of the dumbest distractions I’ve ever witnessed. I suppose the purposely forcing an acknowledged shitty font that was pushed out for a reason is on brand for such a shitty administration.

This honestly sounds likely. My step-mother, in the 80s, said something like this when she got an SUV (before the term had even kicked in). She felt safer and more confident being higher than the rest of the traffic. I “get it”, but it’s a race to the bottom (or top?). Maybe if they get tall enough, some of us can get ultra efficient and low profile wedge shaped cars and just dodge underneath these gigantic abominations.

Something something, “it’s the moops!”

One more reason to hate Kiedis.
I’m pretty sure that my first game was Defender for the Atari 2600, but it is hard to say as I was really young. Could have been Yar’s Revenge or Combat.
